  • About the tea

The Buddha tea "Ama Cha" is a very special speciality. It is an integral part of the celebrations for Buddha's birth. In Japan, it is said that it rained "Ama Cha" on the day Buddha was born. This is why Buddha is still sprinkled with "Ama Cha" or Buddha tea on his birthday.

Buddha tea is made from the leaves of the Japanese garden hydrangea. In the only growing area in the north of the island of Honshu, the leaves are first dried in the sun after being picked, then moistened again and fermented for a day before being rolled and dried. During fermentation, the glucosides in the leaves are converted into phyllodulcin. This is how the sweet taste develops, which is reminiscent of anise in the cup.

The leaves of the Buddha tea "Ama Cha" are so intense in flavor that five of them are enough to flavor half a liter of infusion.

  • Characteristics

Leaf: dark green, rolled whole leaves

    Infusion: golden sunshine

    Smell: slightly floral, syrupy sweetness

Taste: complex, sweet notes and liquorice aftertaste

  • About processing

    Picking season: August to October

Buddha tea is harvested shortly before the plant develops its first flowers. Shortly after picking, the leaves are still quite bitter. They then have to be processed to develop the characteristic taste of Ama Cha.

After picking, the leaves are wilted, rolled by hand, fermented in wooden barrels for 24 hours and then dried. During fermentation, the glycoside turns into phyllodulcin, a natural sweetener that is 400 to 800 times sweeter than table sugar.

Preparation recommendation

Buddha tea is so flavorful that a few leaves are enough for half a liter of infusion. You should vary the number of leaves and the brewing time until you find your personal taste. The longer you let it brew, the sweeter the infusion will be.

Our recommendations are:

Water: 80 °C

Quantity: 10 leaves for 1 liter

Brewing time: 1.5 minutes

You can also brew the same Buddha tea leaves up to four times with the same amazing results.

Japan Buddha Ama Cha - Herbal Tea

The history of Buddha Tea

The Japan Buddha Amacha (Ama = sweet, Cha = tea), also called Buddha tea, is not a tea in the original sense of the word, as it does not come from the tea plant Camellia Sinensis.

Buddha tea is a herbal tea made from fermented hydrangea leaves. The special feature of Buddha tea is its very sweet taste: depending on the fermentation process, it is 400 to 800 times sweeter than household sugar, and that without the addition of any ingredients or flavors.

In Japan, Buddha tea is used to celebrate Buddha's birthday on April 8. According to legend, Ama Cha rained down from the sky when Buddha was born. Therefore, today, during the flower festival "Hana Matsuri", people sprinkle Ama Cha on small Buddha statues decorated with flowers and lanterns. They pour the leaves on its head as if they were bathing a newborn baby.

Buddha tea - which region it comes from

Buddha tea comes from the garden hydrangea or hydrangea, which is native to Japan. There is only one growing area in the north of the island of Honshu. The plantation is about 200 meters above sea level and is quite small.

The mild maritime climate allows for a harvest from August to October.

When should you drink Buddha tea?

You can drink Japan Buddha Ama Cha, Buddha Tea as a pure tea or use it as a natural sweetener in other drinks, such as smoothies.

Despite its intense sweetness, Ama Cha has almost no calories and does not affect blood sugar. It is therefore completely safe for diabetics and can therefore be enjoyed by everyone.

We consider this tea to be very special and although it can be drunk at any time, we see it more as a tea for special occasions or to share with others.
