Why are you called Wildkaffee - and what else does "Wildkaffee" mean?
Wildkaffee: Name, Origin, and Two Meanings at a Glance
Wildkaffee is first and foremost our family name: The roastery bears the name of our founders. At the same time, "Wildkaffee" also describes originally wild-growing coffee that develops without cultivation in the rainforest. Both define our identity as a specialty roastery.

What "Wildkaffee" Also Means: Wild-Growing Coffee in the Rainforest
Wild-growing coffee thrives without deliberate planting in its natural ecosystem. It is part of complex forest habitats, often with great genetic diversity. Such lots are rare, carefully harvested, and clearly marked when we carry them.
Where Wild-Growing Coffee Exists: Ethiopia, Madagascar, Congo
- Ethiopia: Origin region of Coffea arabica with high genetic diversity
- Madagascar: Relics of natural Coffea occurrences in forest ecosystems
- Congo: Wild occurrences and semi-natural forest systems with traditional use
What This Means for Specialty Coffee: Genetics, Biodiversity, and Quality
- Genetic diversity can enable special aroma profiles
- Forest systems promote biodiversity and microclimates
- Transparency remains central: origin, processing, roasting, and cup profile
Common Misconceptions: Is Wildkaffee Automatically Organic, Rare, or Better?
- Not automatically organic-certified - certification and practice are different
- Rarity ≠ inherently higher quality; ripeness, processing, and roasting are crucial
- “Forest coffee” can be partially cultivated; “wild-growing” is uncultivated

FAQ: Wildkaffee Briefly Explained
Why are you called Wildkaffee?
We are called Wildkaffee because our founders Leonhard (Hardi) and Stefanie (Steffi) are named Wild - founded in 2010 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. But: "Wildkaffee" also refers to original, uncultivated wild-growing coffee in the rainforest - mainly in Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Congo.
Does your coffee come from wild cultivation in the rainforest?
Not every coffee in our range is wild-growing. We work with selected specialty partners and lots where origin, processing, and quality are transparent. Wild-growing coffees are rare and are marked accordingly when available.
What is the difference between wild-growing coffee and "Forest Coffee"?
Wild-growing coffee grows without conscious cultivation. "Forest coffee" can also be semi-wild or traditionally managed (e.g., selective management in the forest). Both can be biodiversity-friendly, but they differ in the degree of cultivation.
