How to prepare coffee properly - the degree of roasting
Of course, the beans, or the right roasting for your coffee preparation, play a particularly important role in the end result in your cup.
Tip! In our online shop, you can see under the tab "suitable for" whether the coffee is suitable for your coffee preparation. In general, we divide our exquisite coffees into different roasting levels: dark roast, medium roast and light roast. Based on this feature, you can already tell whether a coffee is suitable for the right coffee preparation.
Preparation of light roasts:
Our light roasts, the specialty coffees, are real rarities. They are the crème de la crème on the coffee market, so to speak. These light roasts are ideal for preparing filter coffee - in a manual filter, Chemex, AeroPress and French press! Daring coffee fans can also prepare the light roasts in a portafilter. The cup profile promises a very fruity, light espresso.
Preparation of medium roasts:
Our medium roasts are also known as all-rounders. This is simply because they are suitable for all types of preparation. Whether as a mild, fruity espresso from the portafilter, or as a strong filter coffee from the Chemex or the manual filter. The excellent medium roasts from our roastery provide an excellent variety of flavors in every coffee preparation.
Preparing dark roasts:
The dark roasts are generally more commonly known as espressos and are therefore ideal for preparation in a portafilter machine, moka pot and fully automatic coffee machine. Coffee drinkers who like to experiment can also try our excellent dark roasts in the AeroPress.
How the coffee should be ground
Once you have found the right beans for making coffee, you obviously need to grind them. Ideally, coffee is always freshly ground. The advantage of this is that the whole beans retain their flavor for much longer. Ground coffee goes off relatively quickly. This means that it loses its unique flavor and its fine notes. That's why you should use up ground coffee within 1 to 2 weeks and always store it safely away from sunlight, oxygen and other odors. The same applies to whole beans.
The right grind for coffee preparation
If all of these conditions are met, the next key factor is the degree of grinding. The degree of grinding and the contact time with the water influence each other. This means that the finer the degree of grinding, the shorter the contact time with the water and the coarser the grinding, the longer the contact time with the water.
If the grind is incorrect, the coffee cannot be extracted optimally. Under- or over-extraction occurs. This can destroy the taste of the coffee. If you have a grinder (Fellow Ode or Comandante), then a description with the correct grinding level is included. If you follow this, nothing will go wrong. You can also order the coffee from us freshly ground to suit your preparation method.
Making coffee - short and to the point
When preparing coffee properly, always pay attention to the following factors: method of preparation, degree of roasting of the beans and degree of grinding. You should be particularly careful when choosing the coffee.
Dark roasts: portafilter, moka pot and fully automatic
Medium roasts: suitable for all types of preparation
Light roasts: ideal for filter methods
Always grind the coffee fresh and appropriately for the preparation method. If you take all of these factors into account, all you need is the right recipe for preparing coffee correctly. You'll find the answer in our coffee blog. There, in addition to the right recipe, we also provide you with exciting background information on how to prepare coffee correctly and the various preparation methods.
Advantages and disadvantages of the different coffee preparations
Of course, each individual preparation method has certain advantages and disadvantages. Let's start with the different filter methods. Chemex and manual filters are the most similar when it comes to preparing coffee correctly and are most similar in terms of structure. The big advantage of the Chemex is its simple structure. It is a dripper and brewing vessel in one and can be easily washed in the dishwasher after removing the wooden sleeves. The Chemex has a specially developed filter paper. So you can only prepare coffee correctly with this compatible paper. This is also the biggest disadvantage compared to conventional manual filter methods. Preparing coffee correctly with a hand filter always requires two parts: the dripper, e.g. the CAFEC Flower Dripper, and a brewing vessel, e.g. the Kinto serving jug. One advantage of this method is that you can use different filter papers. With both brewing methods you can expect excellent fruity end results, especially with the light roasts.
Let's move on to the AeroPress. The biggest advantage of this method of preparing coffee is its compactness. You can take the AeroPress with you anywhere, whether you're on the mountain, camping or on a train journey. With the AeroPress, you can prepare a tasty cup of coffee in no time at all. This is also the biggest disadvantage of the AeroPress. You can only prepare one large cup. Each additional cup requires a new brewing process with the AeroPress.
The French press is also a method of making coffee that is quite simple. The French press can be used to make light and medium roasts into delicious coffee. Cleaning the French press is also child's play and you can save the coffee grounds as fertilizer. The typical French press coffee has a cup profile that is very balanced and has a pronounced body. That's why the taste may not be to everyone's taste. A big advantage: you can also make cold brew coffee in your French press.
The two most common ways to make espresso are with a portafilter and a moka pot. The advantage of a portafilter is that it produces extremely flavorful results. Once you have mastered the basics of making coffee properly with a portafilter, you can make a variety of coffee specialties such as flat white, americano or ristretto. The moka pot scores points for its ease of use. Its compact design and low weight make it ideal for making espresso when camping. In contrast to a portafilter, a Bialetti pot works with a pressure of around 1.5 to 2 bar. Portafilters, on the other hand, work with significantly more pressure, from 9 to 15 bar. That is why the end result of a moka pot cannot be compared with a portafilter. Two almost completely different espressos are produced.
