Coffee beans for the Chemex

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to making coffee with the Chemex. The Chemex is an elegant and popular method for brewing a wonderfully aromatic and clear coffee. In this article, we will show you how to get the most out of your coffee beans with the Chemex.

Why you should make coffee with the Chemex

Making coffee with the Chemex is not only a treat for the palate, but also a visual experience. The Chemex pot, with its sleek design and glass body, creates a fascinating aesthetic. Don't forget to clean your Chemex thoroughly after use to ensure its durability and the quality of the coffee.

The Chemex preparation originated in the early 1940s when the German chemist Peter Schlumbohm wanted to develop a coffee brewer that was user-friendly and suitable for everyday use.

Quality and taste when making coffee with the Chemex

Let's talk about the taste of the Chemex preparation. The Chemex preparation is similar to classic filter coffee from a hand filter, not only in terms of preparation but also in terms of taste. But there are a few differences, which mainly concern the different filter papers.

The specially developed filter paper for Chemex preparation is around 20 to 30 % thicker than standard V60 filter paper. This ensures that the suspended particles and oils contained in the coffee are bound even better.

This means that almost no bitter substances develop in your cup profile and the end result tastes a little clearer and more puristic than with hand filter preparation.

Our instructions for making coffee with the Chemex

1. The right amount of coffee and grind: Start with freshly roasted coffee beans of the highest quality. For the Chemex, we recommend a slightly coarser grind than for filter coffee. For a standard portion, use about 40 grams of coffee to 600 ml of water.

2. Prepare the Chemex: Place a Chemex filter paper in the top of the pot and rinse everything with hot water to remove excess paper.

3. Pour the coffee: Place the Chemex on a stable surface and pour the ground coffee into the filter. Start with a small "bloom" or pre-brew step by pouring a small amount of water (about two to three times the weight of the coffee) evenly over the coffee. Allow the coffee to steep for 30 seconds.

4. The main brew: Pour the remaining hot water slowly and evenly over the coffee, working in a circular motion from the inside out. Be careful not to pour the water too quickly to avoid over-extraction. A good rule of thumb is to pour all the water within 3 - 5 minutes.

5. Enjoy your coffee: As soon as the coffee has completely drained through the filter into the Chemex, it is ready to enjoy. Pour it into pre-warmed cups or glasses and let yourself be pampered by its wonderful aroma and clear taste.
