History of the South African Honeybush
Honeybush tea is different from traditional green or black tea because it does not come from the Camellia Sinensis tea plant. It is an herbal tea made from the leaves of the honeybush plant, which only grows in South Africa. It is grown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and is closely related to rooibos tea (also known as red bush tea), which comes from the Western Cape of South Africa.
The Honeybush shrub bears bright yellow flowers that smell of honey, hence the plant's name. The tea is made by brewing the fermented leaves and stems of the shrub and has been used for centuries by the indigenous Khoisan people for its medicinal properties. Honeybush tea is highly nutritious and caffeine-free, so it can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
In some parts of South Africa, it is still common to have a pot of tea on the stove throughout the day to consume or offer to visitors and to fill the household with a pleasant aroma.
Growing region of the South African Honeybush
