The German (and of course the Germans themselves) favorite coffee is still filter coffee. In many homes, but especially in many offices, countless (old and worn-out) filter coffee machines eke out a life of their own. More or less happily. The coffee brewed with these machines also evokes this emotion in employees. You, too, can bring happiness and joy to your office or home with a delicious filter coffee: with the Moccamaster – arguably the best filter coffee machine on the market.
Moccamaster – best filter coffee machine?
Shortly after World War II, coffee machines – which had long been available to very wealthy people – became more technically sophisticated and less expensive. The Wigomat , developed in Germany at the time, quickly spread throughout Europe and North America. By the 1970s, filter coffee machines had found their way into almost every household and office. We all know these machines: hot water drips onto the coffee powder with a filter bag and then flows into the glass carafe, which stands on a hotplate. That's filter coffee as we know it. However, a lot has changed in this area since the 1970s. One of the best, if not the best, filter coffee machines today is the Moccamaster. And that's what we're talking about here!
Moccamaster – History of the filter coffee machine
In 1964, Dutchman Gerard Smit founded the company Technivorm because "life is too short to drink bad coffee." As early as 1968, he designed the first version of the Moccamaster. Since then, it has been considered the best filter coffee machine in the world by connoisseurs – and not just because of its iconic design. Another unique feature of the Moccamaster is the copper heating element, which maintains a constant brewing temperature between 92 and 96 degrees Celsius, the ideal temperature range for delicious filter coffee. All machines are modular and therefore repairable, come with a five-year warranty, and are ECBC and SCA certified. Furthermore, the Moccamaster is available in more colors than any other filter coffee machine.

Moccamaster – what’s inside
When making coffee, the hot water pulsates from the overflow pipe and is evenly distributed over the coffee grounds through the nine holes. With a brewing time of between four and six minutes, the Moccamaster guarantees that the aromas of the selected coffee are optimally conveyed to the cup – without over- or under-extraction. The Moccamaster is available in various models, depending on its purpose and how much coffee is to be brewed. There is the KBGT for 10 cups, the KBG Select for up to 10 cups and is available in 19 colors, the CDT and CDT Grand as well as the Cup-One for exactly one large cup and a few others such as the Moccaserver, Thermoking and Thermoserve. The best-selling model is the KBG Select. This is mainly because you are sure to find a color that matches your home or office kitchen.
Moccamaster – KBG Select in detail
The KBG Select. Not only is it a stylish filter coffee machine available in 19 colors, but it's also a machine that has been recognized internationally for years by experts from the European Coffee Brewing Center and the Specialty Coffee Association as the best coffee machine. The machine is made of metal and plastic (BPA/BPS/BPF & phthalate-free). It weighs just under three kilograms and takes up little space. It features an anti-drip mechanism, water level indicator, automatic shut-off after 40 minutes, and a selector switch for perfect brewing with a full or half-full tank. The colors available include forest green, orange, pastel green, and this year 's "color of the year" – ocean . The design is simple, classic, yet modern, and thus fits in with any other kitchen decor.
Moccamaster – filter coffee is so easy
Even today, there are many filter coffee machines that make coffee with water that is too hot. This burns the coffee. This makes it taste bitter and often too strong. The Moccamaster is different: with its copper heating element, it keeps the water temperature constant between 92 and 96 degrees, which is ideal for making filter coffee. Even the heating plate is set so that it does not overheat the already brewed coffee, but rather keeps it at 80 to 85 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes. This means that the Moccamaster achieves almost the same quality as hand-brewed filter coffee. The Moccamaster particularly comes into its own when it comes to making larger quantities of coffee. And the preparation is basically quite simple: grind the coffee, determine the amount of water, switch it on, and enjoy.
Moccamaster – Preparation with the filter coffee machine
To prepare the perfect coffee with the Moccamaster, you need a bit of equipment and the right recipe. A precision scale and a coffee grinder would definitely be a plus – because freshly ground coffee tastes best, and you should know exactly how much to use. This is where the optimal brew ratio comes into play, and for filter coffee, it's between 1:15 and 1:17. So, for every gram of coffee, you need 15 to 17 milliliters (=grams) of water. Let's start in the middle at 1:16. For a full pot of coffee from the Moccamaster (1,250 ml), you need around 80 grams of coffee. The grind should be a bit coarser than for preparation with a hand filter, but still within the filter coffee range (i.e., medium-coarse).
Here are the step-by-step instructions:
- Insert filter paper
- Optional: rinse the paper with water
- Grind coffee and put it into a paper filter
- Fill the machine with the appropriate amount of water
- Turn on the machine
- Optional: after two water spurts, stir water and coffee grounds
- After 4 to 6 minutes: Enjoy coffee
Moccamaster – Coffee doesn’t taste good?
As mentioned, we started in the middle of the possible coffee-to-water ratios. If your coffee doesn't taste good, feel free to experiment: use more (or less) ground coffee, or adjust the grind size slightly. If the coffee is too bitter, you can grind coarser; if it's too acidic, you can grind a little finer. However, it's also very important to pay attention to the type of water you use (water hardness, etc.). You can find out more about water here in our blog. The key is to play around with the recipe a bit until you find the perfect one for you.
